Birds do it, bees do it – probably even fleas do it. We all sleep, but why? This film peeks under the covers to reveal a secret, dreamy world and explores how and why sleep evolved – in humans, and in other creatures. Sleep was previously thought to be brain-related, until scientists discovered that pre-brain organisms like jellyfish also power down during the night. Predators on high-protein diets sleep more than they are awake, while giraffes hardly sleep at all. Dolphins can send one side of their brain to sleep, and other creatures sleep their way through winter or drought.
What does sleep, or lack of it, mean to performance, intelligence, and success? Humans and animals alike need a good night’s sleep, to heal injuries, strengthen our immune systems, keep us healthy, and avoid mistakes caused by tiredness and inattention.
