Few animals are more iconic of our relationship to the wild than horses. They have shaped human history and landscapes. While millions of domestic horses and donkeys have been bred across the world, their wild ancestors are vanishing fast. The horse is a majestic animal that has shaped human fortunes, helping us rise to power - yet their great empire is crumbling to the ground. Appearing on Earth 50 million years ago, they conquered the globe, with hundreds of different species but now only few remain. The domestic horses we know today are ancestors of the true wild horse the extinct Tarpan. Plains zebra in East Africa, battle in a land of predation. Donkeys, or asses best known from Christmas nativities, have their roots in the wild. The spirit of the wild horse still runs strong.
