In this episode we take a tour of the tunnel network lying beneath Ramsgate in the UK. These tunnels were originally dug by hand to protect the town’s residents during the brutal bombings that rained down on the city throughout World War 2. But after the war ended, many residents decided to stay down there.
We head to what was once known as the richest hill on earth. Butte, Montana could have gone the way of most 19th century mining towns, and fallen into ruin. But instead they have reinvented themselves, putting the 10,000 miles of tunnels that still lie beneath the town back to use.
And we dive into the subterranean sports arena in Gjovik, Norway. Built to host the ice hockey in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, the free-standing, unsupported Gjovik Cavern Hall was, and still is to this day, a world-renowned marvel of underground engineering.
