In this episode we explore the caves and subterranean tunnels under the beautiful city of Orvieto in Italy. These are caves with an extraordinary history, originally built by the Etruscans long before the Roman Empire came of age. New discoveries in the tunnels have been made since the world was reminded of their presence by a landslide which exposed the entrances.
We visit the enormous former limestone mine under Kansas City that has been converted into a business complex. 2000 workers now come in and out every day, more than 50 businesses call it home, and there is still anther 7 million square feet left unused.
And we venture into the darkness of Peak Cavern in the UK, where humans lived away from prying eyes through the middle ages. Once a hideout for criminals, many of the coarsely named tunnels were re-labelled ahead of a visit by Queen Victoria.
