The South China Karst is a great expanse of limestone, riddled with caves. Underworld: China sees a team of scientists, cavers, and filmmakers discover the secrets of some of the giant cave chambers found within this landscape. Descending into Cloud Ladder Hall, a chamber so vast it has its own weather system, the team spend days mapping out the cave’s entrances and exits, showing how the unique shape allows air to flow in such a way that clouds are formed within it. In addition to revealing the mechanism behind this subterranean microclimate, the film features cave-dwelling monkeys, fearless climbers looking for their next thrill, the deepest and most dramatic sinkholes on the planet, and an expedition to explore, light and photograph the Miao Room, the largest cave chamber on the planet.
