In the wild Westerwald, deep in the heart of Germany, animals are the stars of this show. Some, like the red-backed shrike and the great crested grebe, have lived here for a long time, while others, including the wild cat, black stork, and wolf, have recently returned after a lengthy absence. Still others are new arrivals, such as the Egyptian goose.
From the lush Rhine Valley, where the first flowers start to bloom in early spring, to the rocky mountainous terrain of the High Westerwald, where the cold winds blow, the climate is as varied as the geographical locations. The incredible wildlife diversity is due to the contrasts between open meadows, vast forests, and the scenic lake district.
In this homage to his homeland, filmmaker Hans-Jürgen Zimmerman showcases rarities such as beavers and wildcats, and everyday animals like squirrels, and reveals the endangered Westerwald species.
