Outside the district court, an old lady shoots at a homeless man, Hellmer, who is able to flee uninjured. Mrs Altenburg comes from Görlitz and was in Berlin with her church group on a day trip.
After the incident, Mrs Altenburg has a dizzy spell and is taken to hospital. Lawyer Joachim Vernau offers his services to the woman – he travels to Görlitz to collect her personal things. When he returns, Margarethe has died in hospital
