January 22nd 1944: Two divisions land at the Italian port of Anzio in one of the easiest Allied amphibious assaults of the war. But they fail to exploit their advantage, giving the German defenders time to reinforce.

The battle descends into a vicious duel of artillery.

General Alexander’s eventual plan to break the stalemate works. But instead of crushing the retreating troops US General Clark liberates Rome allowing two German armies to escape, prolonging the war in Italy for another year.
