The first episode focuses on a ruler who went down in history as the Terrible; Ivan IV. He was the first Russian ruler to have himself crowned as Tsar (1547) and, with the "Monomakh's Cap", bore a crown that was to carry deep symbolism for all his successors. It stands for the great riches of Russia, known prior to then only from legend, and which every Tsar to follow would exploit to his own advantage. With Ivan IV, the history of the Tsars' fortune began, accompanied by a chapter of violence and greed.
