They are iconic islands, full of surprises: Mauritius and La Réunion. A sperm whale nursery lies just off of their coast, sharks slumber in grottos, and geckos steal pollen from the bees. But nature is undergoing change: flying foxes are suffering from introduced monkeys that eat all of the available fruit – with fatal consequences. But there is hope: On one small island, conservationists removed invasive species and replaced them with a native variety. An experiment that sets standards.
