Eagles often steal the spotlight as hunters of the sky, but there are a number of equally impressive birds of prey equally deserving of admiration. From hovering kestrels, nest-building ospreys, and tactical hawks, these ‘underlords’ prove that bigger isn’t always better.
While kestrels are masters of stationary flight, as they scan the fields with ultraviolet vision to spot hidden prey, ospreys are master builders who construct immense and intricate nests made of branches and moss. Zone-tailed hawks, meanwhile, trick prey into thinking them harmless by imitating vultures only interested in cadavers.
Yet, these elegant hunters face threats, mainly from humans. Conservation efforts are helping to protect habitats and encourage breeding, but we must all play a role in ensuring a future for these remarkable creatures.
