The dramatic southern plains of Australia stretch from the Pinnacle Desert on the west coast, across the magnificent mountains of the Flinders Ranges, all the way to the vast sand dunes of the Coorong on the east coast. In-between the landscape’s so dry that only specialised species can thrive. Wombats seem to spend most of their time sleeping, but they are experts of survival, resting to conserve energy to help beat the heat. Their lives have got harder in recent times because of invading alien species – toxic plants and killer bunnies that bread so fast they eat the natives out of house and home. The wombats share the plains with deadly bulldog ants, colourful parrots and marauding dingoes. For all of these animals and plants the biggest challenge is the landscape itself and when summer rolls around, Australia really turns up the heat!
The filming of the series “Wild Australia” took three years. Renowned wildlife filmmakers Klaus Weißmann and Rolf Sziringer used specialized macro- and super slow-motion HD cameras to portray the animal kingdom down under. This is Australia as you’ve never seen it before!
