Death by Vinyl is set largely at the nearby mansion of ageing rock star, Sir Ray Ives. Cat Stone, Mattie's ex-punk-Rocker aunt turned crime-writer, is re-united with members of her punk rock band who are in residence at Sir Ray's recording studio to produce a new album. When lead singer, Miss Bliss, winds up dead, Mattie wants to impress her reluctant chief, Inspector Derek Thorne, that she is up to the investigation.
