Nora doesn’t really want a big birthday celebration, and she has no inkling that it will be one of her more memorable ones. Some unexpected guests appear – her parents, who actually run a bed & breakfast in Iceland. Nora generously vacates her bedroom, since her guestroom is basically uninhabitable, and quietly sighs to herself as she thinks about her mother Hanne reorganizing the entire house with her hands-on approach.
Nora begins to panic as she comes to realize that her parents plan to stay on indefinitely. Anger replaces her panic. The wounds left by Hanne and Wolfgang’s decision to leave the country 20 years ago, taking her by surprise and placing the responsibility for the family’s travel agency on her young shoulders much earlier than planned, are simply too deep. And talking openly with each other is something her family no longer knows how to do.
