At fifty-eight, Barbara Köster suddenly finds herself all alone when her eighteen-year-old daughter, Leonie, unexpectedly moves out. Barbara is used to being left behind — her ex-husband, Walter, left her for a younger woman — but that doesn’t make rattling around her large, empty house any easier. What’s more, she’s stuck in a job she isn’t passionate about and has the sneaking suspicion that she’s not made the most of her life. The silver lining: she finally has time and space to reflect on where she is and plan what’s left of her life.
