Episode 3: Secret Languages

  • New

Episode three of “Wild Talk” looks at the vast and intricate world of animal communication that extends beyond the conventional methods of sight and sound. Instead some animals deploy what might be called a “secret language” to do their talking. These methods include the use of scent or chemicals, light, and even electricity to convey messages vital for survival, mating, and social cohesion. For example one widely used method of communication amongst animals is the invisible language of odours. These silent messages consist of chemical substances, called pheromones, which animals release into the air for others to pick up on. This episode looks at how wild cats, such as lions, use these pheromones to talk to each other by reacting to these chemical odours.  This is just one many examples of a secret language that animals can use.
