The young trainee teacher Melissa Ridings takes a train across the Rocky Mountains to Wild Rose Valley, where she has taken on an easy-sounding holiday job for the summer. Her break is to be spent as a companion to an elderly lady at Cross Ranch. She is picked up from the station by Jake Cross, the eldest son of the cattle-raising family, who loses no time in showing her the vast ranch and the stunning scenery with its herds of wild horses. However, life as a companion to Jake’s grandmother Gladys soon proves to be less than straightforward.
