While Anette, in her role as a sexual therapist, helps her patients to dispel their unresolved issues, she realises that her own emotional state is by no means as free and easy as she would wish. Torn between her uninhibited mother and staid partner, her sense of being hemmed in, both spiritually and mentally, and merely tottering through life, grows stronger with each therapy session. In her own affairs, Anette pays no heed to the advice she gives to her patients.
