In "A Day in Dresden 1946," Elli Göbel leads the viewer through post-war Dresden. The young woman is a war widow and one of million displaced people from the former German eastern territories. She has found work as a rubble woman to help rebuild the destroyed city. To provide for her children, Elli has to show great resourcefulness. The supply situation is catastrophic and for the chance of a better life, Elli has to go beyond the limits of what is allowed.
