Dr. Martin Gruber and the mountain rescue service find a severely injured young woman, Tanja Grünert, in the forest near Ellmau. Tanja seems to be a sort of dropout, and apparently she is hallucinating: her description of a huge bear that was following her seems highly implausible. Martin suspects that she has overdosed, but when they get to hospital the symptoms begin to suggest that she has rabies, which would mean certain death for Tanja. In fact, the senior physician in the hospital, Dr. Kahnweiler, now gives up on her and wants to stop treatment, but Martin continues in an attempt to exclude the possibility of rabies. However, if he wants to do this, he will have to find the bear. The search for a possibly rabid bear begins, and soon Hans and Martin's medical assistant Christina are in great difficulties.
Meanwhile Dr Roman Melchinger comes to the conclusion that the budding relationship between Martin and Susanne needs some encouragement, so he does his best to get them together. And at first it seems as though he has been more successful than any form of divine intervention could possibly be…
