Inspector Krüger is investigating two deaths that have occurred near and in Lübbenau Castle. The first victim appears to have fallen into a creek in a drunken stupor and drowned, while the second allegedly died of heart failure at the hotel. However, it soon transpires that the cause of death in both cases was snake poison.
His interrogations lead Krüger back deep into Lübbenau’s past and old family histories. Among the lawsuits filed by the original proprietors for the recovery of land and property nationalized under the former East German regime, he comes across a promising lead: revenge for injustices suffered.
Secrets from the past slowly come to light and in the present, mutual suspicions are rife in the Spreewald community. Death threats are made. In the confusion of old myths and legends Inspector Krüger struggles to track down the culprits and solve the murders.
