Merthin moves into a furnished room offered by Mrs. Ruckhaberle, a widow. He immediately introduces himself to fellow renters Gunda Paprot and her husband Veit. In a fit of jealousy, Veit pushes his pregnant wife down the stairs. Merthin provides emergency medical care and takes her to the hospital, which happens to be the clinic where he will soon start to work.
